Yakama Indians - USA

The Yakama Indians, like most Indian tribes, have close connections to the heavens and the earth.  The unyielding form of the man's body is like that of the land--hard, firm, resisting changes from man and element alike.  His mind is free to soar with the eagle atop the mountains and in the valley, touching everything, like a feather upon the wind.  Peer deeply into his eyes and you will feel the freedom of the soul.  Like the oceans upon the shore.  Gently moving the sands of time with a steady, unending motion.

 

Cuna Indian Girl

The tranquility in the face of the Cuna girl emanates from the heart of the forest where life begins with the cries of jubilation, and life ends with agonizing silence of death.  The never-ending cycle can be heard and felt by those who listen with the essence of their being.  It is through this beginning and end that I started my journey with this collection.

Balance of earthbound power  and spiritual fight of the soul may take many life times to achieve.  The Bali girl is persistent in her quest to perfect the many intricate movements, each with its own meaning, that will help her achieve order within her world.  At the same time, the soul needs to become free of these same earthly powers so that it may become one with the Cosmos.

It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul.  The captivating gaze of the Ladakh infant is a challenge to raise oneself from the bonds of the earth and to rise above the sky,  with hope and love.  To become one with the spirit, the soul.  The headpiece worn by the infant tell of the journeys of his ancestors and of those he is to aspire to.  The journeys he must make to connect his physical and spiritual world.

The Txukahamei Indian Boy

The Txukkahamei (Amazon Brazil) boy lives in a world

 where the wind and the great river run through the land

  just as the blood surges through this young warriors' own body. 

 He is dressed for a celebration of the merging

 of body and spirit and young and old. 

 A celebration of life, of earth, of spirit.

Wodaabe

Niger, Africa

Dark and light, earth and sky, good and evil.  Can one exist without the other?  Does one accentuate the other?  When opposites are so apparent many subtleties are missed.  The contrasts of the Niger environment are as stark as the contrast of the Wodaabe man's painted face.  Beauty and harshness are mingled in the seductive gaze that draws one into his world.

Maasai Girl

This  land may be seen only as barren and foreboding.  Many beautiful treasures lie here, but are found only by those who open themselves to the spirit of the land. The Maasai Girl is one with her land. She has adorned herself with objects that connect her to the land by body and spirit. It is through these connections that her spirit will be tied to the land and soar to the mountain top.  Similarly, by opening our eyes we all may find a way, when the spirit seems barren, to find the treasures of our soul.
